Tour A Decorator's Halloween Home

Come along on a tour of a special home I recently had the
fun opportunity to see.  Teri, an interior decorator with many
other talents too, invited a group of us to her home for dinner.

This is the third home that they have lovingly planned every
detail of and built. They have been in this home for about
a year. The front porches and main living areas are
all decorated for Halloween.

Her home faces a community lake that has a boat house
on it.  This is the view across from her house as we
arrived for dinner:

The lights on the boathouse were just coming on as
the sun set.

Many of the homes in this charming community have
wide front porches were the residents sit in the evening.

The front doors were special ordered (from Lowe's or
Home Depot).  They were made in China and they look
like they are very old but they are not.

Isn't this a novel idea to hang the wreaths low on the door?

When you walk through the front doors, the living room
and kitchen area are in one big space.  The living room is
to the left.

Teri's birthday is on Halloween. She says that she has lots
of Halloween items to decorate with since folks give her
those type items as gifts.

The kitchen has a very unique counter in it.

They designed it to be not only a workspace for the kitchen
but wide and low enough to act as a family dining area.

They have a mix of finishes on the kitchen cabinets.

See that apple pie on the elevated counter?
It was so cute and yummy too!

A doorway off of the living room/kitchen area leads to
a formal dining room beautifully decorated for Halloween.

The centerpiece has a little faux tree filled with cute
Halloween creatures.

The little tree's limbs seem to intermingle with the
chandelier.   Teri added dangling crystals (similar to the
chandy's) to the branches of the little tree.

Here are the pretty place settings for our dinner:

On the dining room sideboard, is another Halloween

vignette.

Off of the dining room is another outdoor porch that is on
the backside of the house.  It is like another room of the
house.  Teri says that even in big rainstorms, there is very
little water that affects that area.

This is the prettiest rain barrel I have ever seen.

Back inside the house, the master bedroom is across
from the porch.  Teri decorates her home and her
clients' homes at wonderful prices by being a skilled
bargain shopper at a wide variety of stores,
consignment sales, and sometimes just by being
at the right place at the right time.

She has very creative ideas for making bargain finds look
very expensive.  For example, these standard size drapery
panels were not long enough for her tall windows so she
bought an extra set of panels to cut and sew onto the bottom to
save from paying a lot extra for the longer panels.

(A tip from Teri...she says that if you need extra long drapery panels for high
ceiling rooms that the store "Tuesday Morning" has a good supply right now.
I'm not sure if that is nation-wide but it could be.)

After two days of living in the house, she realized that
the plantation blinds were not keeping out enough light
in the morning if she wanted to sleep late.  Since the
main draperies are hanging on a turned rod that makes
it difficult to pull them close, she hung a smaller rod
for a simple black out curtain that hides most of the
day behind the pretty drapes.

To accentuate her makeup area in the master bathroom,
Teri placed a Venetian-type mirror on top of the large
mirror and put extra lighting in this spot also.
You can see her husband's sink area in the
mirror's reflection on the other side of the bathroom.

The Venetian-type  mirror is from Hobby Lobby.

In a small bedroom next to the master, Teri placed a king

size upholstered headboard that she found at a great price
against the wall and put a single mattress up against it.
With pillows added, this makes a sofa area during the day
and a bed if an elderly guest needs to sleep downstairs.

Upstairs are more bedrooms and living areas.
One of those rooms has been made into a den for her husband.

He was actually watching TV while we were getting our
tour, so I didn't get too many photos of this room but it
has unique touches like the faux brick wall, exterior
paneling on the walls, and beadboard ceiling.

An old store's display cabinet holds family mementos.

Two doors in this room lead out to the upstairs porch
that can be seen in the photos of the front of the house.

A guest room across the hall also has access to the
second-floor porch.  This framed name art is in that room:

Isn't that a great idea to apply the text to the clear framed glass
and have the burlap behind it?
The last name is blocked for privacy reasons.

Here is the view of the front "yard" from the balcony porch:

They don't have any grass to cut!

Here is the boathouse on the lake across the street now
that it has gotten darker as viewed from the upstairs:

An adorable nursery for Teri's grand daughter is upstairs also.

So many pretty touches in here!  Teri's super shopping skills
furnished the whole room for about $400.

Inexpensive drapery panels were attached to a metal
curtain tieback for the center of the princess draping.

The pick-ups and bows were just tacked to the wall.
Such a great idea for a bedroom for a girl of any age.

Throughout the house Teri used handsome iron
door knobs that she found on sale at Hobby Lobby.

There are many more details in the home that make it
beautiful and unique. I could go on and on...
maybe another post about it another time.
Teri and her husband say that this
is the last house they will build but we'll have to
wait and see about that.

It was a real treat (and not a trick!) to get to have a
tour of this wonderful home...I hope you enjoyed it too.

  4. Great tour. I love that her home was warm and cozy, not polished and untouchable as you would expect a decorator's home to look like. Alaina
