The "Eyes" Have It...Most Viewed Posts of 2014

At a Haven blog conference that I attended one of the speakers
was talking about how to get more "eyes" and "eyeballs" on our
blog posts. I had not heard that term before but here are the posts
on this blog that had the most "eyes" on them in 2014.

There were actually two different posts on the same subject...
making carrot door hangings out of deco mesh but with differing
mechanics underneath. If both of these numbers of views were
combined, the deco mesh carrots would be the top viewed post.

While I was making the first carrot I thought about trying
another way of making the mechanics for attaching the mesh
and made another tutorial using a coathanger and floral wire mesh.

The one post with actually the most views is a craft/party item
that I made for my new grand daughter's baby shower.
It is tiny candy pacifiers made with life savers and jelly beans.

A project that I totally copy catted from StoneGable blog
('cause I just loved the look) is to make pillow covers from
old sweaters.

I'll be getting those sweater pillow covers out again very soon.

Although I had done a blog post back in 2012 about  how to
submerge flowers in vases full of water, I wanted to try an
easier/prettier way of keeping the flowers under water.
I used my Valentine flowers to experiment again in 2014.
This is a great way to make flowers go a long way in decorating.

A blog post that surprized me when I was looking back to
see on the blog's stats which posts got the most views for the
year was the post about making faux terrariums.
When it first came out it did not have many views but it,
like most of these posts, grew in views thanks
to Pinterest and Google searches during the year.

Thanks for coming by to see the most viewed posts for the
2014 on Miss Kopy Kat blog! If you would like to see some
posts that didn't get as many views as the ones above but ones
that I think deserve another look, click on this link...

Peek Behind the Scenes at Miss Kopy Kat Blog

A big "thank you" to Lori from "Stonybrook House" blog
for inviting me to join the DIY Blogland Tour!

I met Lori at the first Haven Conference for bloggers. She has been
an inspiration for me ever since then.  She lets me call her to ask
her opinion about blogging.  I think she is gorgeous inside and out.

Lori likes to put a little bit of everything on her blog...DIYing,
recipes, thrifting, organization and so much more!
Recently she added a feature on her blog called
"(My) Fashion After Forty" where she shares stylish but
age-appropriate outfits and also inspiration thoughts.

Her most viewed blog post is one that she did on how to
cleverly organize drawers with items you probably have on hand.

My personal favorite project that Lori has done is wall art
done from pallet wood.  It has a line from a hymn on it "It is well
with my soul". She used power tools to make it! I'm impressed.

OK. Now onto the required questions for bloggers on the
DIY Blogland Tour...

 1. What are you working on right now?
Right now I am working on decorating my house and
front yard/porch going from Summer into Fall.
Although usually I am like the last blogger alive
getting a seasonal post  done, I had an early deadline
for some Fall decorating  because a local magazine
was coming to my house in August  to take some photos
of me for a September issue.  I wasn't sure where in the
house they would want the photos so I got some
 bare bones Fall decorating done.

I couldn't find ANY real mums, pumpkins, etc. for the photo
shoot so I used all faux Fall stuff from my attic to decorate the
house for the shoot.  If you want to see the result of that exercise
you can click on "Go Faux It Fall Decorating" blog post.

The local magazine came out!  I feel like "Miss September"!

Click here for a link to the "Boom!" magazine.
It is a magazine for the "over 50" folks of which I am!
My husband nominated me to be in the magazine totally
without my knowledge.  He told the editor about my blog,
the editor thought it would be a good story and then my
husband had to talk me into doing the feature.

My husband didn't even want me to start a blog in
the beginning.  His first wife left him for someone she
met on the internet so he was reluctant for me to have
an internet presence.  He agreed if I would have an "alias".

Are any of you old enough to remember the
 TV show "Gunsmoke"?
There was a character on the  show named  "Miss Kitty".
I thought that alias name would go well with the name
I had selected for my blog "Miss Kopy Kat".
Of course the magazine wanted to use my real name
for the September article so now I can "come out of
the closet' and say that my real name is "Gayle".

Actually I still AM in the closet 'cause that is where my
computer is!  We turned a bedroom into an office/guest room
and my computer where I write the blog is in that room.

An example of what I am doing now is out by the mailbox.
Here is a photo of the mailbox area with planting bed at
Labor Day:

Kinda scraggly with overgrown Green Envy zinnas (which
were way too tall and not all that green).  Even though I had
added some red coleus and orange blanket flowers to
replace flowers that had died back from the Spring/Summer,
they were not helping much in this hot sunny area.

Some zinnas with lots of buds, mums and a pot of gerbera
daisies were added to the bed to start a Fall "vibe" to the bed.

Pumpkins arrived in my local grocery store this weekend too so
I was able to add a few to the planting beds in the front yard to
start the faux pumpkin patches for this year.

Hopefully the orange zinnas will get over the shock
of being planted and start letting all those buds
start blooming to add Fall color.

On the front porch I have started adding Fall colored coleus
in the urns to "fall-i-fy" them.  There is only so much room
in the urns for planting and I don't want to rip out the things
that are still growing so I gradually add faux Autumn-colored
stems to the mix.

I'm going to keep the hose wreath with Fall-ish
flowers on it up for a couple more weeks. It makes dragging out
the real hose everyday to water the plants in the front yard a little
more fun to look over and see it. Alabama stays hot even now.

In October I will put Halloween items out on the porch.
In November Halloween will come down and I will
probably pile up pumpkins around the urns
(with even more Fall faux stems by then) like I did last year.

2. How does my work differ from others?
I started my blog as a way to share ideas on how to make
inexpensive but classy-looking things for home decorating,
parties and even weddings so most of my posts are tutorials.
I look back on my early posts and they have 5-6 pictures in
them.  It has kind of evolved that now most of my posts have
LOTS (maybe too many?) of pictures to show detailed steps.
It seems that I post more pictures than other bloggers have
and that may be a bad thing (it makes the post quite long)
but that is what I have the urge to do right now.

I don't expect readers to stop and stare at each picture when
scrolling down the post the first time but if they want to
use the post to make something in the tutorial later, they
will have lots of "go by" pictures to refer to.

3. Why do I write/create what I do?
Oops! I answered part of this question in question 2...I like
to share what I know how to do and also my attempts at
learning how to do new things.  Maybe others out there would
like to know how to do them too and can use my experiments
with crafting, etc. to achieve a high end look on a budget.

I'm not gonna lie...it is also gratifying to me to be able to
share things that I have made with a larger "audience".
On my front door this wreath maybe would have been seen
by 100 folks or so who drive by my house.

was posted two years ago over 600,000 folks have looked at it.

Some of my posts are not tutorials but vignettes or mantle
arrangements to seasonally decorate the house.  If we have
company maybe 25 or so folks would see the arrangements.
Putting them on a blog shares the work with more people.

It's a "win-win"...I get to share my efforts with others and they
in turn might get some ideas that they can use in their homes.

4. How does your writing/creative process work?
When I see something in a magazine, in a store or online that
I really like but can't afford, I try to figure out a Do-It-Yourself
way to achieve a similar look.
(But I'm talking about something within my skill level...
like I don't try to build my own furniture, etc.)

Between Hobby Lobby, Jo Anne's, Michaels, Hancock Fabric,
Home Depot or Lowe's, I can usually find the supplies that I
need to make the object.  Sometimes I buy the stuff to make
something and then never get around to it....I have more ideas
and intentions than I have time for!

I take lots of pictures of the item as it is being made then
even more pictures of the object in the setting that it is going
to be used in.  Then I have oodles of pictures to decide which
ones to edit and use in the post. I would say that I write text
to go along with the pictures more than the other way around.

It takes me hours to do a blog post...wish I was quicker...
maybe I could get more posts done!  I still work full-time
as a nurse at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and have most
of the responsibility of taking care of my elderly parents so
blogging has to take a back seat to those priorities.

Sometimes I get discouraged about not having more time
for my blog and doing creative things.  I saw a quote about
happiness in life by Mandy Hale.  I have taken the liberty
to adapt it to happiness in blogging:

Now I want to introduce you to a blogging friend of mine,
Martina with the blog Northern Nesting.  She does a
beautiful job decorating her home with great "finds" that
she shares with her readers and shows us how to incorporate
newly acquired things in with things we already have.

She has also posted wonderful projects that involve chalk
paint. We must have the same taste 'cause we have done
a couple of chalk paint projects that look almost identical!

My pieces are in my master bedroom; Martina's are in her
daughter's bedroom.  Now we are both ready to paint another
piece of furniture to go in these rooms...wonder if we will
pick the same color again?

Thanks for stopping by Miss Kopy Kat blog on the tour!
Please go see Lori's and Martina's blogs too!

My Favorite Projects of 2012

January 1, 2013

My Favorite Projects of 2012

My favorite projects that I got done in 2012 were not
necessarily the "most viewed" on my blog but they
were personally rewarding for me.  Either they were things
I had intended to do for a long time and finally completed
or just fun to do and see good results.

After years of trying decide whether or not to paint my
antique bookcase/dresser, I finally took the plunge and
painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

I do enjoy working with the official chalk paint but sometimes
I need chalk paint in a hurry and I don't have a supplier nearby.
I devised a way to mix some myself with wall texture from
the home improvement store.  I can make it in as large or as
small a quantity as I need in whatever color is wanted.
I used it on a mirrored screen and various smaller projects.

Another painting technique that I experimented with was adding
artist gel medium to poster/art prints to make them look like
real paintings.  This project earned me a spot in the Shaw Home
Floorings "30 Days/30 Bloggers" Facebook Giveaway.
The first print I did was a winter print in

I also continued to make "paintings" in

...and compatible prints that mimick canvases in

"Summer of '12 Mantle"  also had an art print mounted on
foam core (I never did get around to adding the gel medium
to it) and the  DIY faux Japanese fishing floats.

The most fun part of this mantle was the imitation dock
pilings made out of pool noodles and wood-grained shelf paper.
I won $100 gift certificate from the Dollar Tree for that
project which is detailed in "Using My Noodle(s)".

Another project that was a long time coming was to try to
make an expensive looking Italian chandelier out of a
standard inexpensive one in "The Chandy Challenge".

It was fun to try different techniques to make regular jars
look old in the posts "Making Jars Look Vintage" and

One of the projects that took the most experimentation to
achieve the look I wanted to copy (but could not find good
instructions for) was "Submerging Flowers".

My most recent endeavor (OK, my husband would call it an
obsession) was bleaching, painting, glittering inexpensive
bottle brush trees for indoor Christmas decorating.

Yikes! I still have more bottle brush trees to do blog
posts on but here are the ones I have done so far:
"DIY Glittered Bottle Brush Trees"
"Bottle Brush Tree Mantle Vignette"
"Bottle Brush Tree Wreath".
(I know Christmas is over and no one cares about holiday decorating posts but I have not had time
to blog about the little trees and I just want to so I am...when I can...that's the fun of having a blog.)

By far, the most viewed posts that I did (thanks
to Pinterest and Google) were the ones
involving deco mesh.  I love how quick the deco mesh
projects are to complete and how "showy" they are.
The biggest and most impressive deco mesh wreath
I made in 2012 was the spiral/curly style:

The tutorial for that wreath can be seen at
"How to Make a Curly Deco Mesh Wreath".
I made it in Fall colors but, of course, you can choose any colors.

I'm almost embarrassed to look back on my first deco mesh
wreath I did a post on but it still gets lots of views.
"How To Make Deco Mesh Wreaths"

Other deco mesh wreaths I did blog posts on were
"How To Make A Deco Mesh Pumpkin",

"How to Make A Santa Belly Deco Mesh Wreath"

My most "viewed" post ever is the deco mesh garland!
"How To Make a Deco Mesh Garland"

In 2012 other blogging highlights I had were to go to the
Haven Blog Conference in June (just bought my ticket today
to go back to the 2013 Haven in August) and to have a
blog design make over by Cutest Blog On the Block.
Who knows what 2013 will bring to Miss Kopy Kat?

30 Chances For You To Win Flooring

September 2, 2012

30 Chances For You To Win Flooring

Did you know about the give away that Shaw Flooring
is having on their Facebook page?

Every day in September, Shaw Flooring is giving away a room
of flooring on their Facebook page.  They are having a special
promotion for September that involves some bloggers that you
probably know.  Shaw selected 30 blog projects that were
submitted to be in the give away.  Each day of September, one
of the blog projects will be featured on the Shaw Facebook page.

(Sorry these photos are blurry.  I have seriously lacking computer skills and the only way I
know how to do a "screen capture" is to capture it with an actual photo from my camera.)

Here is the best part, everyone who votes each day will be
entered into a daily drawing to win 180 square feet of flooring!
Each day's winner will get to choose flooring from the new
HGTV HOME Shaw Flooring line.  I got to see the line at
the Haven conference back in June and I was very
impressed with especially the carpet...it looked very high end.
I'm guessing they had some of the HGTV designers help
develop the products.

You do have to register to be eligible to vote and be entered in
the give away but you only have to register one time for the month.

After you register, you can vote each day for one of 30
different projects featured.  Be aware that you can only vote
once each 24 hours.  I thought it was more like you can vote
for several at a time (for instance, in a blog party where you
can "like" more than one entry).  It is only one vote per day.

Each of the entries has its own card on the voting page.
I was honored that my entry was chosen to be in the contest.

For the submission, we were to send ONE picture of the project
that we wanted to be put in consideration.  I couldn't think of
ONE picture that would convey the concept of using prints
to make faux paintings so I made a mini-collage.  That in turn
makes the pictures "mini" too...kinda hard to see...oh, well.

When you click on the orange title of the project on the card,
more information about the project comes up.

Each of the projects will be featured one day of the month
(but they don't tell you what day) on the Shaw Facebook page.
You can vote for any project any day of the month.  The "cards"
were in a different spots on the page today (the second day of the
event) than they were yesterday.  Maybe they are going to move
the position of the cards each day to give each project an equal
showing on the voting page.

Even though you can only vote once every 24 hours, you seem
to be able to leave comments on as many projects as often as
you want to.  I have no delusions that my little home project
would win but if you do register to vote please please come to
my project and leave a comment on it so it won't look so lonely.

If I understood correctly, the blog entry that wins the most votes
gets a room of Shaw flooring along with an area rug to give away
on their blog.  So YOU have an opportunity to win the same thing
that the winning entry wins just for voting!

Another aspect of the September HGTV HOME Shaw Flooring
promotion is that participating dealers are offering "Any Room
One Price" sales.

The prices are good for up to 180 square feet of flooring.
That's the size of a 12' x a 15' room.

Since my pictures are so small on the entry, here are larger photos
and links to the original blog posts about making prints
into artwork in case you would like to see them:

                                               "From Art Print To Painting"

I hope that YOU will win yourself some new Shaw Flooring!
